A little background on how we got here
Several factors helped us decide that Austin was not going to be our forever home. Sylvia’s ongoing disability issues (she’s slowly improving!), climate change, and the growth of the city all played roles. The timing was uncertain, with Jim’s mom being the main reason to stay as long as we did. The last election was the tipping point, however, and we decided we could no longer remain in a state that was so openly hostile to our family and friends. Something fun happened when we freed ourselves from the decision of “doing it.” We got rid of almost everything…and we mean everything…we owned. Here are answers to some questions you may have:
How long will this take? We honestly don’t know and aren’t holding ourselves to any specific timelines.
What cities are you “dating?” Some we are looking at more seriously than others. The running list is Greensboro, Richmond, Baltimore, Wilmington, Portland (Maine), Scranton, Pittsburgh and Madison.
What are the criteria for selection? Healthcare, walkability, art scene, foodie access, dog friendly in a Blue or Purple state, although that may change if things keep getting more dystopian.
Are you doing anything fun aside from the dating scene? Absolutely!!! We are going to see friends, check out local nature scenes to bird and hike and see some cities we’ve never visited. The short list includes Memphis, Nashville, D.C., Salem, Smoky Mountain and Acadia National Parks.
What else? For those that are potentially interested in RV adventures, we’ll likely include mishaps and learnings along the way. And, of course, dog life.
